On Point

When you look at Leven Rambin in the Mötley Crüe biopic, it’s easy to be cynical enough to assume that she was just some random Hollywood actress being cast in a movie whose subject was alien to her. However, she’s always been a rocker. If you go to the Getty Images site (better than Google Images), you will find photos of her attending a 2007 Wolfmother concert. In 2013, there was a minor controversy when it was reported that she made out with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Oscars viewing party.

In a 2015 interview for Nylon, she talked about listening to heavy rock like Nirvana and Marilyn Manson. In a 2018 interview for Pop Culturalist, she mentioned that on her playlist was Bass Drum of Death. When The Dirt came out in 2019, she talked about Queen being her favourite band. In an interview for BriefTake, she referenced the Bohemian Rhapsody film: “I’m obsessed with this movie because everything they had to say in their music was so deep.”

This is the only interview where she talks about The Dirt. She talked about why she wanted to be cast: “After Gone, I wanted to do something that was young and fun and sexy, because Gone was psychologically intense. I wanted it to be a little carefree a bit and just rock out and have fun and let loose a little, and this was the perfect opportunity for me to do that. The project was gestating for about eight years and at one point I was supposed to play Heather Locklear and at another point it was supposed to go away. It had many iterations in my life. Then it came around and I was very excited to be a part of it.”

That said, there’s no Crüe in her Spotify playlist but there is Violent Femmes along with L7, Hole, Bad Company, The Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Blue Öyster Cult, Limp Bizkit, Ramones and Silverchair.

On June 24, 2022, she tweeted: “Working hard to get this music out - if there’s anything more shady than the film industry, it’s MUSIC.”

On June 16, she tweeted: “After daydreaming about it and recording music in my free time for the last 10 years, I am finally releasing an album on ALL PLATFORMS!”

Leven wanted to be a recording artist as far back as 2008. Izzy Gold was going to produce a Fergie-esque album with her but it didn’t pan out. At the time, Leven was a couple of months away from turning 18.
